How healthy are our rivers — and are they changing? Each year, we monitor selected rivers in the Hessequa and Overberg to build a picture of their ecological health. We look at simple indicators including aquatic life, riparian vegetation and visible impacts such as pollution, erosion, invasive vegetation and land use. We bring these results together into a simple State of the River report card, making it easier to see whether river health is improving, declining or remaining stable. From monitoring to learningThe programme is about more than collecting data. We use what we learn to support environmental education and community engagement, helping young people understand the rivers in their own communities and why they matter. Through our education activities, we reach and engage with school learners and youth from local communities, giving them opportunities to explore rivers, learn about freshwater biodiversity and understand the threats facing these ecosystems. The monitoring results provide a practical way to connect what young people see in their local environment with the science behind river health. By sharing the results in a simple and accessible way, we hope to build knowledge, connection and a sense of stewardship among the next generation of river custodians. Keeping track of changeA single monitoring result gives us a snapshot. Monitoring over time gives us a story. Year after year, the State of the River reports help us understand how our rivers are changing, identify where action is needed, and share this knowledge with the people who live, work and learn alongside them. The State of the River programme is made possible through the support of the Table Mountain Fund.
