WITH LARGE TRACKS OF MOUNTAIN LAND UNDER PRIVATE OWNERSHIP, LANDOWNERS NEED ASSISTANCE TO CORRECTLY PLAN CONTROL BURNS AND WORK TOGETHER TO PROTECT INFRASTRUCTURE WHEN FIRES DO COME.
We plan our alien clearing activities closely with our planned burns so that we can remove alien biomass under controlled conditions.
|
We know that fires are a natural part of the fynbos ecosystem and it’s an important tool in maintaining biodiversity and controlling alien vegetation.
The key thing is to work together to manage the risks & make the most of this tool.
With climate change and drought, we are seeing an increased frequency in natural fires which is why it’s essential that we collaborate on effective fire management.
Our fire management is lead by the highly qualified Twakkie Highburg, who has worked on fires in these mountains for decades. He works closely with the landowners who are equally experienced.
Our close working relationship has meant that we have managed to protect infrastructure and limit losses through several challenging burns. |
All members of the conservancy are required to be members of a registered Fire Protection Association (FPA)
- with most falling under Southern Cape FPA,
although we also work closely with the Greater Overberg FPA.
