GUIDED WALKS.

Take a breath of crystal-clear air in the countryside…
And see and hear the untouched natural wonders of the Grootvadersbosch Conservancy on foot, guided by one of our trained, knowledgeable walking guides.

THEY’LL LEAD YOU THROUGH THE ANCIENT FORESTS BURSTING WITH NATURE’S CURIOSITIES.

And through the intense fynbos colours on our mountains and valleys.

THE WALKS ARE DESIGNED TO SUIT YOUR NEEDS.

Longer hikes will challenge regular walkers. Short forest wanders will open new worlds to less-frequent hikers and children.

What’s more – you’ll connect with local, unique knowledge, with guides who are from our area,
and have learnt its many secrets over the years (some of our guides know every single tree species in our forests).

Find out more about:

  • The birds of the Grootvadersbosch Conservancy
  • The small beings in our forest, like our frogs
  • Explore our nursery, or our environmental and social projects
  • Or relax with a cup of tea or coffee, and our amazing views

Our qualified adventure walking guides are also available to lead groups.

MEET ANDRÉ SHAND; AND EXPERIENCE HIS INSPIRATIONAL STORY.

One such guide is André Shand. André is from the town of Heidelberg and has worked for the conservancy for a number of years, building and maintaining trails. He’s grabbed every opportunity that has come his way at the conservancy. And in so doing, has turned his life around.

From an alcoholic who was near death, André is now one of our leading guides – showcasing his knowledge and uplifting outlook on life through nature.

Other guides have equally inspiring stories to share:

- Twakkie is our lead guide and is a wikipedia of local knowledge. He knowns every tree and bird in these forests.

- Edna lives in Heidelberg and is passionate about the environment, she’s busy raising two future naturalists but takes any chance she gets to explore nature and share her story.

- Shaun lives in Suurbraak and knows the history of the community and is passionate about sharing his local knowledge.
