CONSERVATION OFFICER
The Grootvadersbosch Conservancy (www.gvbconservancy.co.za) is a non-profit organisation located between Swellendam and Heidelberg. The organisation works with a range of entities to support conservation on private land. We are involved in a range of environmental and social programmes in the Grootvadersbosch Valley. Projects include alien clearing, river monitoring, trail building and maintenance, environmental education, eco-tourism and forest restoration and rehabilitation. The conservancy has won several awards for their conservation commitment. This role presents a unique opportunity that will suit hard-working, dedicated individuals that are independent and willing to learn. The conservancy offers a comprehensive range of training opportunities with the position.
Position
The position will be based in our Grootvadersbosch office between Heidelberg and Swellendam. The role is for someone committed to conservation and or agricultural/forestry related activities. We are looking for a hard-working individual who is independent and learns quickly. The role will support our existing projects with a range of tasks, specifically alien clearing inspections and management. However other tasks may include: environmental education, rehabilitation and river monitoring. Field ranger experience in freshwater monitoring including SASS, fish monitoring and water quality monitoring would also be an advantage or a willingness to take on these tasks and learn quickly. The role requires a high level of physical fitness to access remote areas.
Having a driving license with confidence driving on gravel roads is non negotiable. Accommodation can be made available but in that case, having your own vehicle is essential for personal use.

Requirements
- At least 2-6 years of work experience in community-based conservation or natural resource management.
- Diploma/degree in forestry management, conservation or related fields is preferable but not required
- Knowledge of herbicide management and application.
- A valid code B driver’s license and a willingness to drive on gravel roads in remote areas.
- Good interpersonal and communicative skills in Afrikaans and English.
- Experience with social media is an advantage.
- Computer literacy Microsoft Office including MS Word, Excel, Power Point and Google Earth Pro.
- Knowledge of data collection for fauna and flora monitoring programmes.
- Experience in managing alien clearing teams.
- Strong report writing and presentation skills.
- High levels of personal responsibility and accountability.
- High level of physical fitness to perform inspection in mountainous terrain.
- Knowledge or work experience in the Greater Swellendam/Hessequa area is preferred although not essential.
- Experience in staff or contractor supervision in community focused conservation programmes.
- Candidates must be willing to take on a range of tasks, work independently and take initiative.
- Experience in SASS or river monitoring
- Experience in restoration and nursery management
- No criminal record.
- South African citizen or valid work permit to work in South Africa
